The Coconino Lapidary Club offers rock and mineral collection field trips for it’s members, primarily from Fall through Spring as most of our collecting is done in the warmer areas of northern Arizona. We try to schedule them for the Saturday after our monthly Friday night meeting. Most are day trips in the vicinity of Flagstaff – i.e. Camp Verde, Prescott, Winslow, Pine and other nearby areas.
You must be a member of the club to participate in our field trips.
Provisions needed for our field trips usually include water, snacks, sunscreen, buckets, rock hammer and shovel. Our field trips are always fun and informative, and you will likely be bringing home lots of beautiful rock, mineral and fossil specimens for your personal collection. All club members agree to abide by the AFMS Code of Ethics.
Past outings have included:
- Gray Mountain and Joseph City for petrified wood
- Pine for geodes
- Diamond Point for crystals
- Camp Verde for glauberite and halite
- Burro Creek for agate and jasper
To be Announced - Possibly DoBell Ranch or Joseph City
What to look forward to:
DoBell Ranch is a fee digging area, where we can dig for petrified wood. The last time we visited the cost for digging your own was $35 for a 5 gallon bucket. We are checking to see if that price has changed. Their website also indicates they are now providing limited campsites & RV space at the ranch.
Joseph City is another favorite spot for collecting petrified wood and some crystals.
We will post detailed information about our January Field Trip as soon as we decide where we’re going – so STAY TUNED!
